Clothes You Can Wear During & After Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a weird and awesome thing. Your body is creating a human, a perfect combination of you and your partner. But all beauty and magic aside, there are aspects of it that are complicated and just plain uncomfortable . Take dressing, for instance; your body will get bigger. Some bodies more than others. Mine was in the latter category, but that is beside the fact…

Pregnancy seems like a long time in the moment, but the reality is that it doesn’t last long. That beautiful, round belly will be gone before you know it. Not a lot of people (myself included!) want to spend a ton of money on maternity clothes. Not that there is anything wrong with maternity clothes, and I believe that certain pieces should be invested in, but they are expensive and an investment for such a short part of your life. So what is a girl to do?

My friend Shelly (isn’t she adorable!) was talking to me about her frustrations with dressing her bump. She is pregnant with her third little girl in three years and is now 25 weeks along. Not only did she not have a lot that fit/lasted from the other pregnancies, but she didn’t want to spend a ton of money on items that would only be worn for a few more months. So we set out to get shopping! I mean, pull my arm 😉

At first I was super excited at the challenge. And then I admitted defeat. Was it really possible to find these unicorn items? And then Shelly tried on a few things and hope was restored! Check out what we tried on and worked for both pregnancy and after. (All sizing recommendations/shopping links can be found at the bottom of the post).

The Choices

First up was this funnel neck tunic. This had a split side hem, which allows for a little more breathing room for the bump. But when worn when not pregnant, it just has the perfect drape! The material is the softest waffle knit, making it a great option for a winter pregnancy. As the bump grows, you can get away with the front getting slightly shorter just by pairing it with a black camisole underneath.

I really want this for myself! It’s so soft and so comfortable. Super cute with jeans like shown here, but also would be perfect for lounging around the house with leggings #SAHM.

Next up was this adorable ruffle sleeve dress. Shelly picked this up and I wasn’t sure it would work, but I was pleasantly surprised! The material is more of a sweatshirt, making it super cozy. It also has the same split-side hem the tunic had, perfect for a little more body grace.

I need more church options, so this is sitting in my shopping cart! Super cute, but also functional. The material would allow me to chase children but look cute and appropriate while doing it!

This tunic is one I have had for a few years and was the first thing to come to my mind when Shelly talked to me about this subject. It drapes so nicely over the bump! I wore this through almost my entire pregnancy with Eloise. You can see it is longer in the back, but is roomy in all the right places.

So my brain can’t do too many things at the same time and I spaced trying this on in the store. But as you can see, of course I own this top! I wear it with leather leggings for a date, with jeans and a front tuck, and I’ve even worn it all the way tucked in with a high waisted skirt. This top is such a great investment!

This dress I know you’ve seen before so I’m sorry (but really, I’m not sorry because you need to buy it!). The ruching on the side of this dress is so beautiful, and it works so perfectly with the bump! It gives just enough room for a growing bump in the most flattering way.

Don’t be surprised seeing me in this dress. Would you just buy it already? I’ll wait for my thank you card in the mail… 😉 It is just such a versatile dress and so flattering.

So you see, it is possible! They may not last the entire pregnancy (I’m looking at you, month nine), but they can pull double duty for quite a bit. The key is to finding the right silhouette and the right size, and consider layering simple pieces like tees and leggings with open front cardigans (I LIVED in this through pregnancy!).

Gift Guide: What’s On My Christmas List – Home

Now that we are heading into our ninth (!!!) year of marriage and our second home together (sixth if you count every apartment too!), our home stash is getting a bit worn. Especially during our move this year, I had quite a few bowls break and other items not make it to the new house. I’ve been eyeing a couple other things to add to my collection too! Read on to see my picks for my Christmas list.

Lanterns These would be adorable on our front porch or sunroom! Or even the foyer. I will find a place!

Dutch Oven This has been on my list for a looong time. This one is much more affordable than the name brand option!

Candle Holders These are perfect! These would be great to add to a centerpiece on your dining table or on your mantle. Or to give as a hostess gift!

Robe I an an unashamed robe wearer all winter long. Its that perfect extra layer while the house warms up in the morning when I drink my coffee! My current robe is very tired, and this one looks so luxurious!

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up  I have been on a mission to organize and simplify my life. A lot of it has to do with parting with clutter and things that I don’t really enjoy. This book has such high reviews! I would love to read it to help me on my minimalist mission.

Crock Pot My crock pot was one of the first things we got as a married couple, but it has seen better days! This one is programmable and everything. It makes mine look ancient.

Cutting Board Can one have too many cutting boards? The answer is no.

Popcorn Maker I love homemade popcorn. Not the stuff in the little packet, the kernels you pop on the stove. This method can be tricky unless you are really watching it like a hawk and shaking the pot the entire time. And then kernels still get burnt. So I am thinking this would be a good investment!

Gold Bowls So many things got broken in our move, and my favorite white mixing bowls were one of them. Yet another original wedding present. I may have had a little funeral for it. These bowls are so classy and would make a suitable replacement!

Gift Guide: What’s On My Christmas List – Fashion

It may come as a surprise to you, but I love clothes. Shocking, I know! But really, I went through a phase of about 5 years where I was basically pregnant or breastfeeding (read the post here) and as much as I love my babies and what my body did,  I needed a wardrobe overhaul. And it is still happening. Here are some things that are on my Christmas list that I am SUPER excited about! Husband, are you reading?..

Wool Turtleneck So part of my mission with redoing my wardrobe was to mature it in the process. Turtlenecks aren’t something that was in my closet previously, but I can totally picture this paired with a vest and my beloved Hunter boots!

Necklace I am obsessed with this necklace! My daily jewelry tends to be more dainty and on the delicate side. This one is so cute and different!

Cashmere Sweater On trend with the updating my wardrobe trend, this is high on the list. Never have I ever invested in cashmere before! I love anything J Crew, so I am excited to add this to my closet.

Ruffle Front Plaid Shirt This is a fun spin on a normal plaid button up! The little ruffle gives it the cutest feminine edge. And the plaid is perfect!

Ripped Knee Jeans I invested in my first pair of high waisted jeans since my horseback riding days last week. You can say I am fully on board for this trend! These ripped knees are super cute too.

Pom pom hat Because yes, I need another hat.

Wubby Fleece Pullover Yes, another pullover. Each serves a different purpose, OK? The charcoal in this is perfect! According to the size chart, make sure you size up.

Sunglasses I have a pair of “winter sunglasses” in navy (yes, there is such a thing in my book) but I would love to add a black pair to my collection! I love this brand.

Leggings I know you’ve heard me talk about my undying love for Zella athletic wear! (Favorite leggings, favorite workout capris) I would love a long pair for outdoor winter running, and the cutouts on these are perfect!

So men, if you are reading, snoop in your lady’s closet and order her a few things on this list in her size! I love surprises, and she will be so touched with your thoughtfulness 😉
