I was talking to my brother’s girlfriend a couple weeks ago about clothes as we painted our nails (stereotypical girls night?!). She was asking how I choose my style and matured my wardrobe. If you’ve followed here for a while, you know that’s been my theme the past few years (read more here). But now that I look at my wardrobe and reflect on her question, I concluded this: quality over quantity, dressing for your shape, and really maximizing an outfit with what you have. So while I don’t have the most expansive wardrobe or fanciest clothes, I have learned how to be more strategic about my purchases.
I wanted to show you what I mean. Stripes are my jam (again, not a surprise!). So here I have my basic outfit: long sleeved tee, jeans, booties. Then, I added just one more layer to add a bit more interest. I may buy a trendy piece every once in a while, but in general, most of my outfits are combinations of classic pieces mixed together (a capsule wardrobe, I guess you could call it!). Here is what I put together to make a simple outfit a little more interesting! (Scroll to the bottom to easily shop these items!)
Not a bad outfit on its own! Just not finished. Check out what happens when you add one more layer…
See what I mean? It looks like a completely different outfit! Check it out with a different top layer:
Crazy, huh?! This is totally my daily outfit as a SAHM #momchic. Now for one last top piece!
So it isn’t about needing a whole new wardrobe, it is just being more strategic about your purchases. I challenge you to take a close look at your closet and try some new combinations. You may be surprised! When shopping, try and focus on improving yous basics instead of buying that trendy piece that may not get as much wear.
A huge thanks to Bekah for these amazing pictures!

I have a different audience from Facebook to Instagram to the blog, so I thought I should round up all my outfits in one place! I have included all links to exact items, or listed similar ones that I could find. Everything is true to size unless I mention specifically. Let me know if you have any questions about any specific items!
Also, 80% of the things linked here are for sale! There are some crazy sales going on right now!
Blanket scarves are something that initially overwhelmed me, until I tried it out for myself. Once I figured out how to wear them, they quickly became one of my favorite cold weather accessories! For someone who runs cold but also has to chase around (aka keep from committing suicide) three toddlers, sometimes heavy layers aren’t ideal. Blanket scarves are a great way to add some texture and color to an outfit!
There are a lot of tutorials to show you how to wrap them if it is a new item for you (see here and here – also total sidenote, but these girls are also great ones to follow!). Most of these are under $10 and I own (and love!) one of them! Now to choose which one to add to my collection…

Top Left This looks so cozy! And the colors could be tied into so many outfits.
Top Center I love the colors on this! The maroon is perfect for fall/winter wardrobes.
Top Right Sometimes simple is better! I love the texture on this and this is a perfect neutral.
Middle Left This is the one I have and love and wear all the time!
Middle Center I reeeally love this one! I love the camel and black combo.
Middle Right This is really similar to another blanket scarf that I have and wear all the time! The pale ocean blue is gorgeous.
Lower Left Another good, simple scarf! This would be so great with a holiday outfit. Great texture!
Lower Center No, this one I need! The colors in this are amazing!
Lower Right OK. This one. I definitely need this one. A plaid doesn’t get much better than this!
Have you tried the blanket scarf trend? Do you love them as much as I do? Which one of these is your favorite? Share with me below!

When Marcus and I first got married, we lived in Florida. It was a huge shock for this New England girl when the fall and winter came around. I don’t love the cold, but I do love a change of season, and Florida just wasn’t the same. I am not hating on the south, I am just a New England girl through and through!
Now that the temperatures are dropping to a seasonal norm, I can break out the scarves, jackets, and boots. There is nothing like getting cozy in my layers with a warm cup of coffee, the smell of the fallen leaves, and a slight chill in the air. I just love you, New England!

Here in New England, we are in that weird time of year where we will have a super hot 80-degree day, and the next is 55 and cold. Even on those hot days, the mornings are chilly and it is hard to dress appropriately. I also don’t like to spend a ton of money on my wardrobe. I mean, of course I like to shop, but due to the whole budget thing (see husband, I do try and be frugal!), I also try and maximize what I already have. Going from summer to fall makes it easy to borrow clothes from one season to the next!
how to do double duty
When transitioning into the next season, make your clothes do double duty! A simple way I make my clothes work for me is by layering on top of my summer tops. By adding the extra layer, it helps ward off the chills on those cool mornings. And then I have a layer I can remove in the afternoon (because chasing little kids around= immediately overheating). This basic tank is my go-to in the summer, and I don’t think I will stop wearing it any time soon! Just switch out your shorts for some jeans, add some cute booties and a statement necklace and you have a simple yet stylish outfit.
I need to mention these jeans specifically too- they are all I’ve worn lately! They are so comfortable and fit great. They look more expensive than they really are. Go try them on; you’ll thank me! I have them in the distressed version too. (Don’t forget to scroll to the bottom for direct links to these items or similar ones!).
If you ever wonder who I am laughing at in my pictures, usually it is my friend Jenn at From the Family with Love. I am not totally comfortable being in front of the camera, and she helps me not take myself too seriously 😉 Here she is!
